Experian can be disconnected separately

A credit score is now part of ChatGPT's personal finance experience, but connecting it is a separate choice from linking a bank account. In release notes dated September 21, OpenAI said eligible U.S. users can connect an Experian credit report and see a VantageScore 3.0 score in Finances. The feature is rolling out to Plus and Pro subscribers on web, iOS and Android. Some eligible accounts may not have it yet.

The addition moves ChatGPT beyond explaining a budget or summarizing transactions. It can discuss reported balances, payment history, credit utilization and other factors from a connected report. That makes the date and origin of every figure important: a score is a snapshot built from bureau data, not a live reading of what happened in a bank account this morning.

A separate connection, with monthly updates

OpenAI says the Experian connection is independent of bank accounts connected through Plaid. Someone can connect credit information without linking bank accounts, or use both. Experian handles identity verification and the authorization flow; users should enter verification details into Experian's form, not a ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI says checking through this connection is a soft inquiry that does not affect the score.

The report and score update monthly. Monitoring alerts may flag a new inquiry, account or address. A payment made today might not appear until the lender reports it and the next report arrives. ChatGPT's display may also differ from another credit service because lenders and services use different bureaus, models or dates.

VantageScore 3.0 is not a universal lending score. OpenAI's disclosure says some, but not all, lenders use it, and a lender's score could be substantially different for certain consumers. A number shown in Finances is useful context, not a prediction of an approval or an interest rate.

What the assistant can and cannot change

OpenAI's help material says the Finances dashboard can show a credit-score widget, score factors and a history as monthly reports accumulate. A newly connected user may have only one score. Users can ask which factors are affecting the number or which card contributes most to utilization, but the quality of an answer depends on the report data available and the assistant's interpretation.

ChatGPT cannot correct the Experian file, file a dispute or freeze credit on a user's behalf. For an unfamiliar account, suspected identity theft or incorrect report information, OpenAI directs users to Experian. Nor does Finances move money, make trades or act as a financial adviser. Decisions with legal, tax or investment consequences still call for qualified advice.

The privacy question to read before connecting

A user can disconnect Experian without disconnecting bank data. OpenAI says the underlying Experian report data will then be deleted from its systems within 30 days, while past conversations or financial memories containing information must be removed separately. Existing ChatGPT data controls apply to Finances conversations, so those settings are worth reviewing before importing a sensitive report.

The news is a narrower rollout than a blanket invitation to send financial details to a chatbot. It is a U.S. subscriber feature with a distinct identity-verification step, monthly bureau updates and separate controls for connected sources and conversation history. The useful question for a potential user is whether those tradeoffs serve a concrete budgeting or credit-planning need.
