Apple Watch is getting a 15-second rewind for real conversations

Apple is giving Apple Watch Series 12 the ability to recover something you just missed in a real-world conversation.

A new feature called Live Rewind can show a text transcription of the previous 15 seconds after the user double-presses the Digital Crown.

The feature is part of a broader set of Audio Intelligence tools announced for Apple Watch Series 12.

How Live Rewind works

If someone says something that the wearer misses, the user can activate Live Rewind and see the previous 15 seconds of conversation as text.

Apple says activation triggers an audible chime even when the watch is in silent mode.

The watch also shows a full-screen animation and microphone indicator so people nearby can tell that the feature is being used.

The transcription can then be queried through Siri or saved to the new Siri app.

Live Rewind is expected to arrive in beta later in 2026.

Siri can also summarize conversations

Siri Recap takes the concept further.

When users explicitly enable the feature, Apple Intelligence can generate a title and key points from a conversation so the user can revisit them later.

Apple says the summaries are end-to-end encrypted when synced through iCloud and cannot be accessed by Apple.

Siri Recap is also scheduled to arrive in beta later this year.

Series 12 adds Sound Recognition as well, allowing the watch to identify important sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells and a crying baby.

That feature uses on-device intelligence.

A watch is becoming an ambient computer

Smartwatches have traditionally focused on notifications, fitness and health data.

Audio Intelligence moves Apple Watch further into the user's physical environment.

Instead of only responding to deliberate voice commands, the device can increasingly understand sounds and conversational context around the wearer.

That capability can be useful.

It also makes transparency and user control especially important.

Apple appears aware of that tension, which is why Live Rewind includes visible and audible indicators and Siri Recap must be turned on by the user.
