Mistral has raised €3 billion in a Series D funding round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. The French AI company says it is the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company.

Samsung Electronics led the round, with the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity joining as co-leads. The funding comes just three years after Mistral was founded in Paris.

Mistral says the new capital will be used to expand frontier AI research, increase compute capacity for training, build infrastructure and accelerate international growth. The company now operates across 20 countries and says it supports more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.

The bigger story is not only the valuation. Mistral has positioned itself as one of Europe’s strongest alternatives to US and Chinese AI companies, with a focus on open-weight models, regional infrastructure and technological sovereignty.

Reuters reports that Mistral could reach $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026. The company is still much smaller than OpenAI or Anthropic, but investors are increasingly treating it as strategic infrastructure for Europe rather than simply another AI startup.

The round gives Mistral considerably more capital to compete on models, infrastructure and enterprise adoption while Europe continues looking for ways to reduce its dependence on foreign AI platforms.
