GPT-6 Astra is already rattling software stocks
Shares of Salesforce, ServiceNow and Intuit fell as investors weighed whether OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra model could automate more of the work traditionally sold through enterprise software.

Business & StartupsGPT-6 Astra is already having an impact beyond AI benchmarks.
Shares of several major software companies fell on September 8 as investors considered whether OpenAI's new model could disrupt parts of the enterprise software market.
Salesforce, Intuit and ServiceNow each fell roughly 4% to 5%, while the S&P 500 Software & Services index declined 1.4% for a second consecutive session, according to Reuters.
The concern is straightforward.
OpenAI describes Astra as its most capable model yet for computer use, browsing, software engineering, cybersecurity and professional work. The model can navigate interfaces and complete multi-step tasks rather than only generate text.
That creates a new question for traditional software companies: what happens when an AI agent can perform workflows that previously required users to move manually through several SaaS products?
Enterprise software is not disappearing overnight. Companies still depend on systems of record, databases, compliance controls, permissions and large operational platforms.
But the interface layer may be changing.
If agents can increasingly operate those systems on behalf of users, some of the value may shift away from the individual software interface and toward the AI layer controlling it.
Investors appear to be taking that possibility seriously.
The market reaction does not prove Astra will materially reduce the businesses of Salesforce, ServiceNow or Intuit. Stock prices move for many reasons, and broader market weakness also affected the session.
Still, the selloff shows how quickly frontier AI models are moving from a technology story into a valuation question for the software industry.
OpenAI says Astra is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, as well as through its API and cloud partners.
The next phase of the AI competition may therefore be less about which chatbot gives the best answer and more about which existing software workflows still need a human sitting in front of them.
